What to Fix First in a New Apartment (Avoid Expensive Regrets)

Visual of a couch and coffee table with decor all in neutral colours in a modern and stylish apartment.

You move into a new apartment and suddenly your brain goes into overdrive: “Okay… what do I fix first?”

If you want quick wins (and fewer expensive regrets), here’s the order I recommend.

1) Lighting (always first)

If the lighting is harsh, everything feels worse — even nice furniture.

Start simple:

  • switch to warm bulbs (and keep the temperature consistent across rooms)
  • add 2–3 lamps (living room corner, bedside, entry)
  • aim for layers: overhead + task + ambient

This one change can make your apartment feel calmer and more “finished” immediately.

2) The “drop zone” (your daily reset button)

Keys, bags, jackets, shoes… decide where they live.

If you don’t, they’ll live on the coffee table — and the whole home feels messy.

Quick setup:

  • a hook rail or 2–4 hooks
  • a small tray/bowl for keys + wallet
  • a basket (or closed cabinet) for the “random” items

One small system = instant calm.

3) Sleep setup (before decor)

Before you perfect the living room, make the bedroom work.

The fastest upgrade is always:

  • curtains/blinds (ideally blackout if street light is an issue)
  • bedside lamps (warm light, not the ceiling light)

Better sleep = better decisions (and better patience for everything else).

4) Storage for the real stuff (not the Pinterest stuff)

Not the styled shelves. The everyday life stuff.

Start with what creates the most visual noise:

  • cleaning supplies
  • laundry / linens
  • paperwork
  • cables / chargers
  • pantry basics

Add:

  • shelves + simple organizers
  • closed baskets for categories
  • a “one home” rule (each category gets one place)

Less clutter = a more premium feel — even before you buy anything new.

5) Paint (after 1–2 weeks)

If you can, live in the space for a week or two first.

Watch how the light changes throughout the day.

Then choose colors.

Paint is powerful — but it’s also the easiest place to make a “looks great at 11am, feels wrong at 6pm” mistake.

Quick recap (save this)

  1. Lighting
  2. Drop zone
  3. Sleep setup
  4. Real-life storage
  5. Paint (after 1–2 weeks)
