May the Force be with you! Star Wars Day is a fun reminder of something that matters far beyond movies: staying true to what you actually like.

In interior design, “best practice” can be helpful - but it’s not the goal. You are the person who will live in the space. Not Pinterest. Not trends. Not someone else’s checklist.

This article gives you a calm, practical way to create a home that feels personal and looks elevated — without getting trapped in rules that don’t fit your life.

Who this is for

You’ll find this especially helpful if you:

  • like the idea of a “timeless” home, but don’t want it to feel bland
  • feel overwhelmed by advice (“never do this”, “always do that”)
  • are renovating, furnishing, or refreshing your space and want fewer regrets
  • want a home that’s beautiful and easy to live in

The real goal: a home that fits how you live

Before we talk about style, ask a better question than “What’s trending?”:

What do I want my daily life to feel like at home?

Most “bad design decisions” aren’t bad — they’re just mismatched to lifestyle:

  • open shelves can be stunning… if you love styling and maintaining them
  • white sofas can be incredible… if your day-to-day supports it
  • minimal can be calming… if it still leaves room for personality

The 4-part framework: Live / Move / Feel / Maintain

Use this as your filter for every big decision (layout, furniture, finishes, lighting):

1) Live

What actually happens in this space?

  • coffee rituals, cooking, hosting, working, kids, pets
  • what needs to be “easy” vs. what can be “special”

2) Move

How do you move through your home?

  • door swings, walking paths, storage access
  • what needs to be effortless (entry, laundry, kitchen workflow)

3) Feel

What mood do you want at home?

  • calm, warm, minimal, bold, playful, grounded, airy

Pro tip: choose 2–3 words and use them as your “north star”.

4) Maintain

What can you realistically keep tidy and clean?

  • fabrics, finishes, grout, high-gloss surfaces, open storage

This is where “premium” is often decided: not by the trend, but by what stays beautiful over time.

5 common “design rules” you’re allowed to break (and what to do instead)

Rule 1: “Neutrals are always safest.”

Better: pick a neutral base plus one personal anchor (material or color). Examples: warm wood, deep olive, terracotta, brushed brass, a single bold artwork.

Rule 2: “Open shelving everywhere.”

Better: use open shelves only where you’ll maintain them — and keep the rest closed. In kitchens, a “hybrid” approach usually looks more premium and stays practical.

Rule 3: “Minimal = no personality.”

Better: curate, don’t erase. Choose a few meaningful pieces and give them space to breathe.

Rule 4: “Follow the trend for a modern look.”

Better: prioritize proportions + comfort + lighting first. Trends can be accents, not the foundation.

Rule 5: “You must pick one style.”

Better: pick one consistent story (palette + materials + mood), then layer influences inside it.

A quick self-check before you commit

Before you buy, approve, or order anything, ask:

  • Will this still feel good in 2 years of real life?
  • Does it support the way I live, or does it force me to “perform” for the space?
  • If I’m tired, busy, or traveling — will this home still work?

Next step: turn your preferences into a plan

If you want a calm, premium home that feels personal (without getting lost in 1,000 decisions), a short consultation can save weeks of overwhelm and expensive mistakes.

Bring:

  • your city + property size (sqm)
  • your timeline (when you want to move in / finish)
  • 3–5 reference images (what you like)

And we’ll map:

  • a clear design direction
  • a furnishing/renovation priority list
  • a practical plan that fits your lifestyle and maintenance comfort
